Hi-Rez Art

Sat Jul 12, 2008, 11:24 AM
Why I can't Upload Higher Resolution Versions of My Art

Thanks to everyone who has sent such kind messages since I joined yesterday.  Sadly, i cannot post higher-rez versions of my art, as certain nefarious types download them, make prints, and sell them on eBay and the like without permission from me or the copyright holders.

So, it's the "A Few Rotten Apples" excuse.

Also, thanks to everyone for the kind words about my damaged hand.

Sincerely,

-AH!

I don't know if anyone's mentioned this specifically, but I think that DA offers a DA watermark when you do your uploads to help protect your artwork. When you select the file you want to upload and DA loads the preview in "What File?", there's an option for "show watermark in the fullview image".

Or you could just dumb-down the dpi on the image to make it unprintable.

*hugs*

Take care *.* I think that you could upload some higher resolution images, but just throw watermarks all over them? I love seeing your work a bit closer.

maybe add a huge watermark across the image then? i know it's annoying but some of us would like to enjoy the high rez work you put into this.

just a suggestion!

I don't blame you either. I've dealt with a few of those people too.

See you at Fallcon, I suppose?

AH! Post some of your Red Sonja stuff! I forgot to mention that!
And Wonder Woman! She's the one who you got me hooked on, friend! Your WW is what made superheroes come to life in fiction for me.

Oh my hell, I've waited for this day for so long...my god. You are my absolute favorite artist of all time, of all genres. I collect your comic art just like many do...yay! I still can't believe you're here! It makes me so effing happy!
Welcome!

I'm speechless...really. I hope I can meet you one day.

I am very glad to see your work on Deviant art. I understand how you feel about having your work stolen and sold on ebay. I have had people use my art on there own personal websites and to make really crappy animated gifs out of it and trust me it was pretty irritating. None the less, I am glad it doesn't stop you from sharing your work with the DA community. Welcome! I hope you start a print account that would be BAD ASS!!

Hmm, I'd really love to see your art at a higher resolution, because there is so much to learn from really being able to see those amazing and wonderful pencils and inks you do.

What I would do: Upload a very small resolution image without watermark or anything, just so the image is visible once, even if only very tiny. And then upload a larger resolution version of only part of that image, e.g. the image with a VERY broad white stripe over it. That way no-one will be able to retouch your art and sell it, but those of us interested in your technique would still be able to see examples of it in part of your art.

Maybe.

Anyway, I'm surprised and glad that you joined DA, and I sure hope that you will share with us some thoughts and insights into your life and workshop.

All the best!

Manfred

That sucks. It's amazing to see your stuff clearly. I despise scavengers for many reasons, and the one you stated TOPS my list.

Oh well. I'll take Hughes any way I can!

The deviant watermark is a good extra precaution, for most posts, not too ubtrusive..

I hope you would upload at least some of your work in hi-res 'cause I want to see and drool over your detailed artworks.. ^^ else, this would be just another plain gallery like the other sites. You can just add watermarks, it helps to protect your works.

Knowing that you're finally here.. really made my day :)

mmmm but you can control the display size in all moment, just when you upload it and the image is waiting down it you see: size of the image and choose 600-800px, it's not so big, and for prints is a sh*t.

however, you can try buying here the prints XD (if in your firsts two days you got 11,000 visits, i'm sure you can sell them, i'll buy them XD)

Watermarking the art should do the trick. I've seen higher rez stuff of yours elsewhere. I never knew people were selling prints of your art like that; what jerks.

I'm still crying about your hand, since you're finally coming out to Toronto. Mind you, my wallet's stopped sobbing, so I guess that's a good thing.

Hope to see you and Alison at the con!

So glad to have you here, welcome to DA! I've been a big fan for years. You are one of my favorite artists and occupy a top spot on my list of artists I fantasize about having draw my characters. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work here, though it seems you've already been busy. :D

low res or not, your art is most welcome. As always its the standard by which many should be judged. Yeah, that's right, I'm pouring on the hero worship a little thick. It's not everyday you get to communicate (although one-sided) to an icon in the comic industry

Hope your hand heals up nicely and you can provide us with great art soon. ;) As for the res.... Like most people I would love to see a higher res, but I totally understand your point. Well, I guess there are people who love art and people who love green... *sigh* Cya around!

Your hand is damaged? In that case, I don't pray or anything, but get well soon!

DeviantArt watermarks your art for free, if you opt for it. But the watermarks are unnattractive, and not REALLY a deterrent at all. I've seen stolen art with the stamp sloppily painted over. Heck, I've seen stolen bits of art with the stamps mostly in place.

You do what you do. The art looks great regardless of size. Though I would like to see one of your originals in person someday.

Can't you make the resolution lower but the pixels a little higher than what you're posting?

75dpi at about 700 pixels usually is a decent image size for view, unless you can still get a quality print out at that size, which would of course cause the problem of reproduction of your work.
