Well, the word is out: DC Comics is returning to the world of WATCHMEN!  And I am drawing all four issues of the DOCTOR MANHATTAN miniseries.  First sign of the Apocalypse?  You bet!

It's great to finally be able to talk about this project.  I signed on AGES ago, and have kept mum about it, until now!

WATCHMEN is arguably the greatest superhero comic ever produced, and without a doubt my absolute favorite.  Being allowed to draw these amazing characters isn't actually a dream come true: I never thought something like this would happen.  I'm pretty nervous, but having fun so far.

My history with WATCHMEN goes way back.  In 1986 I was working at Thunder Road Comics in Burlington, New Jersey, and I sold every issue of WATCHMEN as they came out.  It was a pretty amazing time: THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS was also shipping, so superhero comics were enjoying a banner year.  The mullets, parachute pants, and New Coke made up for it, though.  YIKES.

Several years back, I was one of the first artists to contribute designs to Zack Snyder's film adaption of WATCHMEN.  I mean, I only worked on the film for, like, eight minutes, but I cast a long shadow!  Did you like Silk Spectre in latex?  That was ALL ME.  That's right - I'm preening!

So, you see, I have some strange sort of orbital relationship to WATCHMEN.  I feel pretty honored to be working it.  I'm looking forward to drawing all these characters.  Yes, DOCTOR MANHATTAN is an unusual choice to assign me to, but I'm assured that DC has a plan!  Maybe they believe that, since I'm well-associated with drawing female anatomy, I'm qualified to handle blue penises.  Wait... that doesn't sound right...

I love Alan Moore's canon of work, with special affection for MIRACLEMAN, THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN, and most definitely WATCHMEN.  I hope to do some sort of justice to Dave Gibbon's brilliant art: he's one of the all time great illustrators ever to work in the field of comics, and I have a serious case of "My LAST boyfriend was a porn star!" performance anxiety when it comes to bringing his beloved characters to life.  I've only met Dave twice: he was drunk both times, and holding an award both times as well (I'd celebrate, too, if I won awards).  I hope that if I get to see him again, we'll manage a congenial hat trick of insobriety, and that he doesn't go all 'soccer hooligan' on my ass.  "Those are MY characters, you apocalyptically colonial wanker!!"

I'm fairly stoked to be working with the fabulous J.M. Straczynksi.  I loved his THOR run, especially.  The man knows how to craft amazing tales, so I feel like you & I are in good hands.

So!  I should get back to drawing Dr. Osterman, in all his phosphorescent azure glory: this miniseries has to ship in summer 2012, and no one will ever accuse me of being fast.

Adam, I have to say you are very generous with the negative, presumptuous 'I-already-know-it's-going-to-suck' phlegmwads who post here...more generous than I would be, that's for sure. Why don't we all cut the crap? Who the hell doesn't wan't more WATCHMEN drawn entirely by ADAM FREAKING HUGHES???

My biggest reason, I will confess, for wanting to see it is to see how your page-art method has evolved after all these years of covers. It probably isn't still the same as it was in the Wildcats/X-Men day. You've got to answer one question for me though, concerning a drawing technique it easier for you to get a face right after you've already drawn part of the figure?

It's about time you did a mini-series! I've been waiting for that moment for a long time now! Next stop, GRAPHIC NOVEL!!!!!

Can't wait to read it!

That would explain why you haven't had a lot of updates lately. Man, that must have been killing you not being able to tell us anything. You have my sympathies. I truly look forward to seeing the new issues. I know they'll be epic.
jaggedlittlebill Featured By Owner Feb 19, 2012
ok. Nix my last comment. I found an article bringing me up to date. Still, I bet most of us would be thrilled to get the results of even a half-hearted effort on this Adam (despite this not being your style). Oh well, we've got lots to look forward to with Dr. Manhattan. Just don't go crazy with the little stuff you perfectionist you.

To be specific: I didn't do the final design seen in the film: I was merely the person who suggested to director Zack Snyder to use latex, in the initial design stage.

Aaron-the-automaton Featured By Owner Feb 7, 2012
That's still pretty cool, did Snyder actually ask for you? Or does DC recommend people?
I still appreciate her costume, either way.
AdamHughes Featured By Owner Feb 7, 2012
Zack Snyder hired me and all the other artists who worked on the film because he liked our work, I guess.

Adam, I'm psyched. I've been following your career for a while and I think this is totally something worthy of your talent!

So let me get this straight-- you're doing covers AND interiors for the first 4 issues? Are you also slapping on those insanely good colors?
noelnoel Featured By Owner Feb 4, 2012
Hi, there. New fan over here. Well, a fan for about a week now since I saw a vid in youtube featuring you while doing sketches in a convention. Prior to that, I've seen a lot of your gorgeous artwork through the years but never quite got to know the name behind the works until I myself started my own journey into art recently.

And then news about Before Watchmen hit and I was one of those who contributed to that simultaneous collective groan from the Internet. Needless to say, I was quite conflicted about knowing that You were involved with the project, same as how many who would not have liked the idea of a Watchmen prequel or sequel but ended up with a more neutral stance due to the involvement of a favorite creator or two.

At this point, I am still prejudging the project much like many others who are against it. My prejudgment would be that your work here would be at a usual very high standard and would probably be the the best or near the best of your career so far. I'm thinking the same would apply to probably 60-70% of the entire venture involving the other writers and artists, just because Watchmen occupies a special place in the hearts of every creator who loves this comic book business.

However, knowing that aesthetically and financially this will probably be a huge success is probably secondary to the idea that ethically, this isn't a good move for the creators involved. In a way, (as I now oversimplify the matter), the picture that many have in mind is that it's Alan Moore on one side of the fence and the Before Watchmen creators on the other side. Which makes it very hard for Watchmen fans like myself to support you and your colleagues' works in this project, knowing that Alan Moore really doesn't want this project to happen, at all. It is strange to see how a project and its creators who acknowledge the status, importance and uniqueness of Watchmen in this medium, and the stature of Alan Moore as probably the most revered creator in this industry could go ahead and push through with a project knowing Alan's position against it.

In the end, though I still hope that the many talented creators involved in this undertaking be assigned to other high-profile projects in DC, I wish you well in this endeavor and know that the art in the Doctor Manhattan issues will be absolutely stunning.

P.S. A better hope of mine would be that someone again in DC extends the olive branch to Alan and manages to elicit at least a grudging acceptance of the idea of these sequels resolving much of the moral dilemma involved with supporting these works and creators.

Great that you draw a miniseries (not just covers).
I saw this cover: "[link]" and I have only one little problem with it: [link]
Because of the shadows on Silk Spectre's legs inner side it looks like to me that her butt is on the front of her hip.
An other guy said that it looks like Dr. Manhattan ANALyze her. I don't think so.

Anyway, it's a great picture from you (as always).
Please, do more marvelous covers and illustrations to inspire us.

An other thing: I bought your CoverRun book as a christmas present.
Totally worth it.

Wow!!! Glad to hear you're getting a chance to work with characters that mean so much to you, and are so iconic. If anyone will do justice to the work of Mr. Gibbons, it's you. I've no doubt of that. I'll be picking these up, you can bet. :)

While I look forward to it, are you haunted by the angry spectre of Moore hovering above your bed at night? = /

I once walked past some Mircle-Gro in Target and thought I saw his beard from under the bags because of some
connection with Miracle Man. Not saying I definately did, just... maybe...

I'm not entirely behind this series (I feel like it should be left alone) but I'll will definitely be buying your issues of the prequel (along with Darwyn Cookes) as you are one the greatest comic talents and one of my favourite artists. and I watched one of your drawing tutorials on YouTube - brilliant! Best of luck with this great opportunity!

i was very sceptic to hear there are new Watchmen comics.
But bringing in Heavy Weight Champions like you and J.M.Straczynski gives it at least hope.
I still wished DC would stop receycling and bringing more original new stuff.

Very excited for this. I know that there will be a large group that follows Moore's reaction of "you're just using these characters to make money." I think my brother put it best when he reminded me that Watchmen, LXG, Supreme and Lost Girls are all based on - or just directly use - characters already in existence. To say that a new, good story involving these characters can't or shouldn't be written is ridiculous. Especially when it's coming out of Moore's mouth.

Best of luck to you and JMS, Adam. I couldn't be more excited to see the finished product. Cheers.
