Late last night, a lone gunman went on a killing spree in a movie theatre in Aurora, Colorado.

At least 12 people were murdered, and many more were wounded; some of them are in critical condition.

If you are a spiritual person, please say a prayer for the dead, the dying, and those living touched by this tragedy.

If you are not a spiritual person, any happy thoughts or kind gestures would surely be appreciated.

Please refrain from any speculation, politicization, rumor-mongering, conclusion-jumping, finger-pointing, and other similarly inappropriate behavior for just a little while, if possible.  It hasn't even been 12 hours since the tragedy took place, and that sort of unproductive demagoguery is already being handled nicely by the 24-hour news venues.

Real tragedies like this happen, all over the world, and our responsibility to our fellow man is to render aid & support, be it large or small, in times of crisis.

In my country you'd have to go through a barrage of metal detectors, as well as body search before you can pass through any establishment. I used to complain about that but now I don't, the threat of terrorism in my country is very real.

Thanks for posting this. I live about 15 minutes away from the cinema it happened in, and if they hadn't been sold out my friends and I would have gone there, so I really appreciate the support and I'm sure my community would as well.

I heard about this on the news here in Australia and was horrified! I was amazed at the bravery of some of the movie goers that were able to get out of there, and felt terribly for the ones that got caught up in the shocking rampage... I have no idea what would bring a person to do something like that and frankly I don't care to know, but I do wish the people affected all the best in their recovery from this tragedy.

Call me an extremist but I'm happy you have Capital Punishment there in Colorado. They should do this EVERYWHERE for extreme cases like this one (I'm thinking of you Anders Breivik).
These people take lives like it doesn't matter, they don't deserve to live, they should have the same punishment they so much like to apply to so many innocents. In the real world the good guys are the ones that lose and die.

I've been in tears all day from this. My thoughts and prayers and hopes are for all of the victims and their families.

This man was a monster, and my heart breaks especially because so many young people were there and were hurt.

The main news outlets haven't been that helpful, but so many artists and others online have been so wonderfully supportive and kind, they help bring us together in the face of this tragedy.

I was so close to going to the theatre it happened at, but at last minute I decided to go to another one.

I actually go to that theatre (century 16) a lot, and let me tell you it is SKETCHY. this isn't the first time someone has brought a weapon in there too, the media just keeps it on the DL. the security sucks, and there's a mall right next to the theatre where there was also a shooting. Aurora is really going to hell, man... its sad. I've lived in aurora for years and I never thought it would deteriorate like this, but its happening. we're even getting a bigger gang problem, drug problem, and we even have serial rapists running around.

It just goes to show that no matter how careful you are, theres still bad shit that could happen anywhere, because honestly Aurora isn't even that bad an area compared to places like Chicago, Watts, yadda yadda.

I couldn't believe this when I heard it. I'm glad the scumbag was caught. What a shame though. People out to enjoy a movie, friends and family alike and some murderer had to kill half the theater.

My prayers, for what their worth, are with the victims and their families. Appalling and heart breaking to see something so positive (i.e. an amazing film bringing together folks from all corners of pop culture -casual movie goers, comic book fans, etc) used to commit something so vile. If there's any justice he'll get put in front of a firing squad, and they'll be a special place in hell waiting for him when it's done...

Adam,
Thank you for your thoughtful words.

A single person's unspeakable actions have just irrevocably damaged the lives of so many people.
What can be said?
What poetic words will erase this tragedy?
What can we do but offer our sympathies to the dead, the injured, and the heartbroken?
Nothing will change what has happened.
All we can do is try, in our own ways, to mend the wounds.

I am not a religious person, but at times I find myself asking, "god, why are we so weak?"

I am not a religious person
