Star Wars RPG Art by AdamHughes Star Wars RPG Art by AdamHughes
Here's the concept sketch, pencils, and final art to this STAR WARS role-playing game from 2000. I include it because the teen Jedi in the middle, the one in lavender? I eventually cut off her hand and killed her on the Darth Vader PURGE cover.

Great art. I love how pieces of art can back great memories memories. I saw this art at my first GenCon in 2k, in some intro or teaser materials for the launch of the d20 SWRPG. Good stuff.

Its always sort of creepy when you discover a character dead, then find out about their history and epic adventures after.

Though her epic adventures are only implied and not shown really.

very kind of you to show how you reach the final image. the best bit was watching the choices you made from the first panel where all of darth mauls face is fairly visable and instead you finished it with his nose and mouth just showing. realy great proces

One of my favorites of yours and it is mainly because of Darth Maul in the background. Yes, he's subtle and mostly obscured, but everything about him in this piece is cool.

That's pretty awesome, I had no idea they were such sticklers to continuity - next thing you know it there'll be an action figure, and a bio of her.

Hey Adam, I just happened across this post this evening, great to see those sketches again (I wonder if I still have my notes that i sent back to you these, I think it was something along the lines of "This kicks ass!" - I don't even remember marking anything up). I'm glad you can show the creative process in the trip from concept to sketch to final, especially with a licensed property, since so many people have to look it over and say "OK."

I had no idea that you had used our female Jedi teen on that Dark Horse cover until now. I wish I would have been following comics more closely when that was released!

Now I'm gonna have to big through my old backup CDs and see if there was any notes. I'm still really happy with how this piece turned out and how easily we were able to get this okay'ed and through the Lucasfilm gauntlet. Like I told you back then, when I wrote down my wishlist for artists to work on the game, your name was one of the very first, along with Drew Struzan, and I was lucky enough to work with both of you.

Thanks for the little trip down memory lane!

If she's the WoTC SW RPG Jedi... I think I've seen her. Didn't they call her Sia-Lan or something?

I referred to her simply as 'Loretta'.

What I like about seeing the pencils, inks, and final versions of artwork is that you can see how the artist made little changes to the picture. Sort of like seeing the growth process. Thank you so much for posting this! And welcome to DA!

*hugs*

I like the clean look from this one, but as you said on another deviation, there is something in the pencils that doest get transalted to well when in colors.

this is a great image, wish I could see it larger. Why can't Lucas make these role playing things into real comics so we can read the stories and be a part of these wonderful ideas?!:(

and I wonder if there's a Sith who has a gallery of famous Jedi's hands that he's killed=]

Awsome works ...
Love the sketch shades ..
And deeply love the lineart ..
Very stable very delightfull ...

But the color ruins it ...
( its just flat color ok .. not even production finished isnt )

But ...
Its a shame how you do the same work 3 times ........

Sketch is one work ... lineart another that errases some sketch qualities ...

Colors another work that erraze the all work below and all the best part ...

When yu should complement it way alot better ...

( sorry my entusiastic tecnical happy talks )

But you will have hundreds saying how good you are ...
Maibe you just dont need one more do ya....

...
Then maibe i'm in doubt ...
Maibe you dont have cintiq at all ...

( that is were you would be able to complement better all parts of the process ) ...

You just do sketch one page ...
Light box and lineart ... ink over .. or not even ink ... but just with pencil - then put into photoshop and slap some basic color with vector ..........

Then airbrush over it ....

But anyway you are old school ...
Will be hard for you to change your methods ...
.. with so many many years just doing the same isnt ....

But if i was you i would buy the cintiq ..
"the biguer" As you have money for that ...

And i would try to use it ... just it .. sinçe sketch .. to lineart to paint ...
Will change the way you see and do art ...
I'm sure we will see that in even "more charming" quality ....
Than all the already you have ...

If thats possible for a old man like ya ...
eheh

Charming ...

HAve fun bie <3

if he wanted it easy, dont u think he wouldve done it by now? he's a perfectionist. And I dont think hell even use cintiq, he still uses a mouse for coloring.

I read your journal post mentioning why you don't upload higher resolution for pictures.

Nevertheless, I will still ask, any chance of getting even a slightly higher resolution of this one?

such a cool picture, so much to learn from.
