Monkey Pause by AdamHughes Monkey Pause by AdamHughes
Year: 2010
Client: Emerald City Comic-Con
Media: Pencil & PITT pen on Strathmore Drawing paper, then colored with Adobe Photoshop CS2

This cover is for Seattle's Emerald City Comic-Con, which takes place March 4-6, 2011, and I will be in attendance.

The proceeds from this art book go to Seattle Children's Hospital, so, yay for good causes. ECCC has raised over $10,000 in the last two years with this endeavor.

My only editorial dictum was: copyright-free/ public domain monsters and ladies. For no good reason, I wanted to draw a sexy Wicked Witch of the West.

This is so much fun!

But it looks so much like Elphaba from the Wicked musical (based on The Wizard of OZ) that it's a good thing you didn't get in trouble!

Okay, here's a triva bit for you. 'The Wizard of Oz' went through a raft of cast changes: they orignially wanted Shirley Temple to play Dorothy, W.C. Fields for the Wizard, Buddy Ebsen to play the Tin Man, and I believe they wanted Joe E. Brown to play the Cowardly Lion.

Gale Sondergaard (best known as the 'Spider Woman' from the Sherlock Holmes movies) was originally slated to play the Wicked Witch of the West, as a glam witch. There are some pictures of her costume and makeup tests out there on the web. But, when they decided to go with the green skin paint and the outre nose, Sondergaard was afraud that it would hurt her glamourous image and opted out. They went with Edith Hamilton, and a movie icon was born.

Still, your picture shows an image of what might have been...

Just had a discussion with my 7 year old as to wether the Witch of the West was really wicked or if people just didn't like because she was green...

Love your stuff!

The scene is overall adorable; it could be very well made into a mini or something! :D
Also, it looks as if that Chimp is pointing to her bust and she`s like "Sigh. He`s at it again..."
