Here's a Dejah Thoris, Princess of Mars, sketch I did at FallCon in Minnesota. The owner is a friend of mine and artists Chad Spilker & Chris McElvey, so he always brings.... a scanner! So it was nice to get a scan and not just a 12 megapixel photo of the art.

The owner's wife nicely agreed to be my booth-babe while Allison was home sick, so I kinda gave him Dejah Thoris, both barrels, overdoing the sketch a tad.

He really appreciated the fact that I drew in radium globes (NOT Barsoomian slang for breasts) as well as omitting a navel, since the folks on Mars come from eggs. I don't make this stuff up.

Con sketches have really helped the ol' hand loosen up.

Darn. I just noticed my clever attempt at fontography has resulted in "A Princess of Maps", aparently.

i've never read the comics myself. but in the original books she is described as naked as all martians are. here is the expert describing her first appearance int he book

And the sight which met my eyes was that of a slender, girlish figure, similar in every detail to the earthly women of my past life... Her face was oval and beautiful in the extreme, her every feature was finely chiseled and exquisite, her eyes large and lustrous and her head surmounted by a mass of coal black, waving hair, caught loosely into a strange yet becoming coiffure. Her skin was of a light reddish copper color, against which the crimson glow of her cheeks and the ruby of her beautifully molded lips shone with a strangely enhancing effect.

She was as destitute of clothes as the green Martians who accompanied her; indeed, save for her highly wrought ornaments she was entirely naked, nor could any apparel have enhanced the beauty of her perfect and symmetrical figure.

Why oh why did they have to put a shirt on her for the film?

Is Disney's reputation really that lofty, when the priest who married Eric and Ursula was sporting a boner?

I like how you are able to give easy atmospher in a "simple" sketch...Construction, units, natural positions and life in the character.

Your work is an inexhaustible source of inspiration for me.

Merci Monsieur Hughes.

Nice sketch ! She looks properly aristocratic & refined & very lush. Although I think at least one original paperback cover showed her as small, petite & small - boned / gracile, almost child - like rather than voluptuous like an Amazon warrior princess a la Wonder Woman or Xena.
Still the details are great, & you're about the 3rd artist who says that Martians are hatched from eggs in ERB's Mars. I guess I don't know as much about his Mars as I thought.

Well, there's no real physical description of Dejah Thoris in the books, beyond her red skin and that she's the fairest maiden of two worlds. Depicting her, then, is the pervue of the individual artist, and therefore subject to some license and interpretation. Some artists, like Frazetta, liked to portray women as big-bottomed damsels-in-distress, waiting for a Real Man to come along and save them, so his Dejah Thoris followed suit. Michael Whelan likes to depict petite, delicate ladies, so his Dejah Thoris is the same. Artists get to depict Dejah Thoris subject to their own particular tastes in women, I feel.

All inhabitants of Barsoom are indeed hatched from eggs, so there's an ongoing friendly debate as to whether or not Dejah Thoris or Tars Tarkas should have navels. :-)

That makes sense, although Kate Moss or some anorexic model shouldn't try to pose as Dejah.....

I keep thinking that Dejah's outfit possibly inspired the look of Princess Leia in the slave girl outfit in " Return of the Jedi " along with the princess in " Flash Gordon " whose name I just forgot.

They're hatched from eggs, yet Martians of both sexes have mammalian characteristics & reproductive organs. An interesting contradiction.

I'll have to find those old books or reprints & read them again. Definitely !

The generally-accepted belief is that Princess Leia's slave girl costume was directly inspired by Burrough's Martian princess.

And the whole egg thing... Burrough's wasn't TOO concerned about hard science in his science fiction, in 1911. John Carter travels to Mars by simply wishing very hard, Mars is red because it is covered in crimson foliage, and people there lay eggs. If you want to ADD to that - John Carter weds Dejah Thoris, and they are able to have children. John Carter is able to perform astounding physical feats on Mars, due his terrestrial origins & Mars' lesser gravity. Yet, somehow, his children inherit these physical traits, even tho they themselves spend their whole lives raised in Mars' lesser gravity.

Just run with and have fun.

and other things went beyond "inspiration;" John battles a large, hornet-like creature called a "Sith" in one of the books...the vicious creatures they encounter while imprisoned are "Banth" (bantha?)...yeah. Inspiration. :\

Amazing. I thought as much.

So ERB's Martians can lay eggs & have mammalian characteristics, AND have interspecies sex. In the Syfy made - for - tv turkey..... I mean movie about John Carter Warlord of Mars, they show John leaping around like Superman & apparently doing everything BUT flying.

Fiction, 1, science, 0. Still that was the Victorian era when all the planets were thought to possibly have ( hopefully ) advanced life & civilizations.
Hey - After all, in the 40's, Dick Tracy still had people living on the Moon despite the idea that the Moon PROBABLY DIDN'T have a substantial atmosphere, bodies of water, etc.
