Coraline II by AdamHughes Coraline II by AdamHughes
From the Big Apple show in NYC, just last weekend.

Some fellowtold me I could draw whatever I liked, so.... for no really good reason, I drew a grown-up Coraline (a book & movie I loved!)

Pencil, PITT pen, Copic warm & cool gray markers, Winsor-Newton white calligraphy ink, black & white Berol Prismacolor on 11" X 14" Strathmore Drawing paper

Here it is, a parody of the idea of sequels. Generally in a sequel, you're supposed to do everything the first movie did, but bigger!! This makes sequels predictable (and something I don't like) so I'm not sure whether to feel comical joy here or fear of a cheap sequel (presumably directed by Michael Bay) here.

Hey, Neil Gaiman likes this sketch, so everyone that objects can shut their pieholes.
Some people miss the gentle fun of seeing a beloved childhood character grown-up & bodacious; basically, humorously out-of-context.

It's a joke you probably aren't old enough to get, :-).
One of the JAWS sequels had the tag line "THIS time it's personal!"
Which was laughably stupid, even at the time; the idea that a shark has decided to make your ongoing war is fantastically silly.
So....for geezers MY age, adding 'this time it's personal' as a tagline to a sequel is a sort of shorthand for saying "This sequel is really unnecesary". Which is the joke I was going for: another Coraline, with her as a full-grown woman, would be a REALLY unnecesary sequel.
:-)

I like the idea, and the execution is proficiently done, but do you really think a girl like Coraline will grow up into the cliche "sexy superheroine bimbo" mold?
Reply
:iconadamhughes:

It's just a fun joke sketch, nothing to fret about.
If Coraline ever DOES grow up (meaning, in some sort of sequel), I don't think she'd wear the same clothes, either.
It's all a bit of fun. Apparently, Neil Gaiman just saw the peice, got the joke, and liked it.

By itself, I suppose it's a joke, sure. But it's a bit less of a joke when ALL your women look the same. And when in general our culture has a tendency to sexify everything.
