Catwoman Sketch Cards by AdamHughes Catwoman Sketch Cards by AdamHughes
Casual Deviation Day, Pt. I

Here's 4 sketch cards I did for an auction at FallCon in Minneapolis/St. Paul last year.

The card stock was horrible, and my Copic markers stuck to the paper like hot butter to Teflon.

But the one double-card was fun to do. Nothing like a 'buyer incentive!'

Is it weird that I really really like this picture because I think I look like her?

But only at certain angles. This is also an excellent set of drawings by the way... not to downplay your amazing aptitude at the sequential arts.

I love how Selina has wide eyes, and no white to be seen. Such good art.

Just out of curiosity, what paper is usually best for copic markers? I'm really new to using them....

It depends on the look you are going for.
I like the Strathmore Drawing paper, it comes in pads with yellow covers.

I love an expressive Selina! She looks so playful and while her short hair is very cute, I can just as easily picture her with her long flowing locks. And it looks here like she still has her impressive purple catsuit knockers.

If ANYONE was going to get away with drawing a sketch card consisting entirely of boobs, yet not being sleazy, it's you!

That being said, I love Selina's profile. She's so elegant and crafty.

The Profile is one of the reasons I based my take on Selina Kyle off of Audrey Hepburn. I once read someone's description of AH, and it went something like: "...a swan's neck, and a profile a queen would envy..." I kinda liked the idead of a profile that royalty would go green for, and thought Selina could be like the royalty of the Gotham City Underworld. Classy, aristocratic, and above everyone else.

Anyhoo, that's the goffy stuff that goes through my head when drawing boobs.

;-)

That's brilliant. I've always seen an elegance in your Selina, that's kind of ethereal and delicate - while she's still been a 'warrior woman'. I think Audrey was an inspired choice.

She's always so 'above it all' as a character, it's so nifty having that aspect shown.

That's my point- the damn marker ink wouldn't absorb into the paper! It just sat in top of the paper, waiting to air-dry on the surface, and just smearing around.

Your faces are so natural! I know you've had years of drawing the same faces so you should be able to do these without it, but I wanted to know if you use reference for your expressions?

Sometimes, if the expression is unusually sublime, or if the style requires serious lighting detail.

This is neat. I love how you draw Catwoman - it reminds me of when you drew Ghost. I guess I have a thing for women with short hair. lol. My GF finally cut her hair short and I'm in love all over again. :D Anyways - good stuff!

i new it yes! all my friends said i was crazy! ever since that awesome cover where she is pulling the mirror off the wall exposing the safe. i was like that has to be based off the picture of Audrey Hepburn in the white sheet thingy.
i love your work stay in the fight!

Thanks. Facially, it was based off of several different images; an eye here, a smile there, different lighting. But Ms. Hepburn was alwasy the starting point for any Catwoman cover I did...
