Catwoman 64 Uncolored by AdamHughes Catwoman 64 Uncolored by AdamHughes
Today's deviation is the line art to my CATWOMAN 64 cover. Pencil & ink on Strathmore 300 board, cold-press, probably about 12" X 18". I ink with a Scharff no. 4 watercolor brush, and do all the hatching and techinical stuff with a Rapidograph technical pen.

I'll post the color version next. I added thinsg like the snow in the coloring stage, and threw in a few bats because I thought it added some action to a static shot.

I was shooting for a sense of altitude and freezing cold in this one. Nothing special, just a pin-up.

This is my favorite cover of any comic period, it's just an all around great piece. It's really cool to see the line art for it.

The cool thing about your page here at Deviantart, is that you explain your method and tell us what you use to do it.

Actually, I prefer this black and white version. It seems that a lot of this superb line work was lost in dark colors.

One of the subtle things that makes a big difference is how the lines for the clock stop short of impacting Catwoman's face. Little things like that are simple ways of cleaning up an image and making the figure pop. It's soooo nice to see the details of the hatching in there...

Thanks, Adam!

So glad you're on Deviantart. I'm a huge fan. Is most of your work produced digitally now, or are pen and paper still a factor?

I think he knows about it, DA sets a default size - Adam's a pretty smart guy, and you can find the line art elsewhere.

I wonder why catwoman doesn't have a classic costume design like most heroes or villians. Batman, Superman, etc, costume designs have remained mostly unchanged, granted some minor retouches here and there, but the essence has remained the same. Catwoman´s design has changed wildly over the years, I'm just wondering why has it been that way. BTW, great B&W illustration.

Beautiful and really just a fun perspective. She is called Catwoman for a reason!

Her face and bangs reminds me a lot of Audrey Hepburn...

Your crosshatching really captures one of those old black and white photos, that leave those spotty blacks as grey tones. Great stuff. Can't get over how you're anatomy of the body is dead on and very much your own.

You're cross hatching is insane, you should post up the lineart for the Boba Fett piece - that's some insane work there.

Both pieces are fantastic!

I use hatching and cross-hatching on a lot of pieces. Sometimes I do all the rendering in the colors (letting the line art be very basic) and sometimes I do all the rendering in the line art and let the colors be flatter.

I notice the hatching more on other pieces now that I've looked closer (I'm a relatively new fan of yours) and I'm dissecting your art. Do you go with your gut or is it a conscience decision when you decide to go basic with the line art or use a lot of hatching?

:iconadamhughes:

It's a 'go with the gut' thing. Some pieces, like the Boba Fett cover, kinda just ask for the hatching technique.
